Say Cheese!
To write an assignment for this film, I would first show the film to my students muted, then ask them if they could imagine any sounds that would go with the film. Then I would have them make themselves into groups of three or four, and dependent on circumstance, either deliver instruments to them or not. I don't think I would tell them before hand if they were getting instruments, because I think that might limit creativity- they might base their sound effects on the instruments they have and not what they can make with their bodies or surroundings. I would have them practice it a few times, probably giving them 11 minutes or so (because precise odd numbers stick and work better) to figure out what they wanted to do before preforming. They would stay in the classroom where they could watch the muted video on a projector or whatever resource I have available, or I would split them off to work around the area, dependent on classroom set up. I would have them perform their sound effects in front of their peers before playing the video with audio, before having them reflect on what they did differently and if they thought that these discrepancies changed the narrative of the story.
